The Enrichment Program at St. Mary of the Lakes is designed to meet the varied strengths of high-achieving students in grades four to eight by helping them develop higher level thinking and reasoning skills, creative thinking strategies, problem solving abilities, and research skills in an atmosphere that encourages creativity, freedom, and exploration. These classes are to be an extension of the regular classroom learning and the school’s curriculum. The Enrichment Program will incorporate Bloom’s Taxonomy, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math), and other theories of multiple intelligences, along with themes, units, lessons and assignments to challenge and meet your child’s intellectual needs.
The determination used to select the students eligible for the Enrichment Program includes multiple standardized test results, prior academic performance, teacher recommendations, and a Sages Screening Test.
Students who qualify for the program are pulled out of their classes once a week on a rotating basis to participate in activities that stimulate and improve creative thinking abilities. Those students are responsible for making up the work that is missed in their academic classes, as well as keeping up with the typical class expectations. It is required for participating students to maintain an average of 85% or higher in all academic classes to remain in the Enrichment Program. Your child’s participation in this program for the 2019-2020 school year doesn’t guarantee that he/she will be participating in future years.
This year's projects are focused on contests and community involvement. The fourth and fifth grade students are currently participating in the UNLESS Contest through the Philadelphia Zoo. The students are collaborating together to make a difference in our community and to help prevent climate change. The sixth and seventh grade students are combining technical writing with creative writing by participating in an Engineered for Learning Writing Contest. The eighth grade is creating a Mock Trial through the New Jersey State Bar Foundation where we will be jurors for the winning case. If our case wins, we will be presenting it at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick instead of being members of the jury.
