During sixth grade the students focus on the stories of the Old Testament. They learn how and why to read the bible. Each class strives to teach the students how to apply what they learn to the issues they face today. Students discover our faith is the cornerstone of who we are as Catholics.

The sixth grade Science program focuses on life, beginning with the introduction of the cell. We We discover how the cell divides and functions. Our study continues with the simplest invertebrates and moves through the many classifications of vertebrates. We also get to experience working in the Science lab. Our labs include learning how to use a microscope, examining one cell organisms, dissecting an owl pellet, earthworms and even sharks!

Sixth grade math focuses on mastering skills taught in fifth grade; such as place value, fractions, and decimals. We also develop skills in the areas of geometry and prealgebra. These skills are developed through modeling, practice, and project based work. Students work towards becoming problem solvers and seeing how math integrates into our daily lives and across the curriculum.

While studying the ancient civilizations of the world, students will develop research skills and strategies that will help them present a variety of projects. Each project will strengthen their skills and offer them a variety of opportunities to share what they learned with others. Note taking skills and study techniques will be developed as well.

Learning how a novel is put together is just one of the ways we develop skills in Literature. A selection of novels both in-class and independent choices will be used to identify character, setting , plot, conflict, resolution and theme. Developing writing skills is an important aspect of 6th grade. There will be a variety of writing activities throughout the year. Students will have set requirements for each writing piece.
