Earlier in the year, we covered the four types of sentences: declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory. You might want to review them in your text - they are on pages 438-439. From there, we are going to move to simple/compound sentences. Read Section 6.4 - pages 440-441. In your binder (grammar section) please write the definitions for simple sentence and compound sentence.

ELA: **Journal #8 (3/25/20) If you had the ability to fix one problem in the world today, what would it be? Why did you choose that issue? (When I selected this topic, I didn't realize that we would be in this situation! Obviously, one of the most important things to fix right now is the virus.....but, aside from that, think about what other problems need our attention.)
**Great to see everyone and their furry friends today on Zoom! We'll meet up again next week. **Before we start our next unit in writing, I want to introduce/review another important part of speech - the preposition and prepositional phrase. You saw this mentioned many times on your DLPs last year, and many of you were unsure of what they were. Look at page 444 / Section 6.6 in your textbook. You will see many words that are used as prepositions in sentences. Prepositions show relationships such as direction, location, and ownership. For example: think of a book and a table
The book is ON the table. The book is UNDER the table. The book is NEAR the table.
**The word that changes the relationship between the book and the table is the PREPOSITION.
**Prepositions come in phrases. The phrases END with a NOUN.
**In the sentences, the prepositional phrases are: ON the table, UNDER the table, NEAR the table
**This Noun is called the OBJECT of the preposition.
Complete Exercise 2 on page 445. Write the preposition and the prepositional phrase on a google doc. Then, complete IXL section FF -1 (Prepositions).

** We are going to continue with our look at persuasive writing from a few different viewpoints. First, think about advertising. What is its purpose? What are some things advertisements try to get people to do? What advertisements stand out to you? Can you recall any strategies the advertisers use to communicate their message?
** To prepare for our Zoom discussion tomorrow, please complete the worksheet called “Invent a Product” that is in Classroom. When we meet on Zoom, we will discuss your ideas, and advertising in general.
Tuesday 4/21:
** Today’s interactive notebook page has been assigned in Google Classroom.
** We have a Zoom meeting at 10:30. The link is in Classroom. Please bring your ideas from the “Invent a Product” worksheet. I have notes for you on Persuasive Writing that I will share - bring a notebook or your binder to write down some ideas that will help you to plan for your project.
** Complete IXL - Writing - Section K 1. (Distinguishing Facts from Opinions)

** Journal #16 (4/24/20) Think for a minute…..Do you have any bad habits/things you need to stop doing? What is the thing/things/habits that you would like to change, and what are some ways you might be able to change them?
** In Google Classroom, I have put three advertisement examples for you to read. Once you have read each advertisement, use the “Critical Components” worksheet from Classroom to record the details from each. (Product name, description, attention-grabbing words, etc..). You will be creating an advertisement similar to the three you are reading today. Be sure to identify a particular sentence or phrase you find particularly persuasive. How was it used in the ad?
Thursday 4/23:
** Please remember to finish your interactive notebook page from Tuesday.
** Today, take a look at some sample ads in magazines/newspapers if you have them. Take note of the strategies that are used. What do you notice? You are going to start to write some persuasive statements about the product you designed on Monday. Use the “Because” worksheet in Classroom to Brainstorm THREE important words about your product. (For example: time-saving, affordable, fast….) Then, choose ONE word and give three reasons why that word could be used to describe the product.
** Next, you are going to continue to design your product: Add a label to it. Include:
Product name (catchy and clever), Special Features (at least 4), Persuasive Phrases to interest buyers, Urgency (How long will the deal last?), Affordable Prices (How much does it cost?)
Friday 4/24:
** Journal #17 (4/24/20) If someone wrote a book about you, what would the story be about? What would it say?
** Please review what we started this week with the project - make sure you are caught up!
** Today, look at the “Pre-Writing - Using Exact Words” page in Classroom. Your ad will need to appeal to buyers in different ways. I have given an example for each, and under my example, you will try to provide an example that would be related to YOUR product. Add sentences, phrases, and words that would interest buyers and encourage someone to buy your product.
** Don’t forget your Weekly Work #28 (vit, viv) is due on Monday!

ELA:
Monday 4/27/20
** Journal #18 (4/27/20) Think about the best field trip you ever had. Write about that day.
** Please remember to turn in Weekly Work #28 and see Weekly Work #29 in your Google Classroom. It will look a little different this week - we are going to use a variety of prefixes that all mean the same thing - Also, there are three pages this week. Please complete Exercises A-F. It will be due next Monday!
** PLEASE check Google Classroom to see if you are missing any assignments! It will tell you if anything has not been turned in.
** Once you have completed Friday’s prewriting page, take a look at the next 2 pages called “Pre-Writing - Propaganda Techniques”. If you look at the material I provided in Google Classroom, you will see an example for each! I would like YOU to think of an example for each that would go with YOUR product. Please complete these pages as they relate to YOUR product.
Tuesday 4/28/20
** Your interactive notebook page has been put in Google Classroom.
** There will be a Greek/Latin Roots quiz on Friday! It will include: port, phon, script/scrib, vac, therm, vis/via, viv

Think about a few that we have already covered - Alliteration (when you have several words in a row that begin with the same consonant sound), Onomatopoeia (when sounds are the words), and Similes (comparisons using like or as). You will be writing an example for each that could be used in your advertisement. There is a completed example page in Classroom for you to use as an example. It is at the bottom of the "Writing" section in Classwork and is called "Prewriting - Ad Examples".
** Work on your weekly work!
Thursday 4/30/20
** Quiz tomorrow on Greek and Latin Roots including: port, phon, script/scrib, vac, therm, vis/via, viv/vit

** Complete the three “Planning Your Ad” pages - use all of the pages you have created up to now to help you complete them. The more complete these pages are, the less you will have to do when we write the ad. Prewriting is when much of the toughest work is done!
