5th Grade Assignments - Week of 3/23-3/27/20
ELA: **Journal #7 (3/23/20) Choose a TV, movie, or book character you identify with....who is it? From which book/show/movie? How are you the same? How do you understand the character so well? Tell about what you have in common.
**Please be sure to turn in your DLP #24 on Classroom. I have posted a new one for this week (#25), which will be due NEXT Monday.
**Continuing with our writing project, we are going to take the next couple of days to focus on one or two body paragraphs per day. You will use your research notes to complete the organizers for each body paragraph. This will further help to organize your thoughts! (The worksheet is in classroom - Body Paragraphs: Main Idea and Details). You would do one of these organizers for each of your body paragraphs. They may be done in docs, or in your notebook/binder. You do not need to turn these in - this is a place for you to organize! Your topic sentences should already be written, and you may want to revise them when applying them to the organizer. At this point, you should provide two to three supporting details/examples to support the main ideas and explanations in each paragraph. Once the details are added to each paragraph, each should end with a closing sentence.
**We have a Zoom meeting scheduled for Tuesday at 10:00. You will find the link and code in classroom!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reading: **Check your answers to the workbook pages - 155 (1-10) and page 156. They are posted in classroom.
**In your text, review page 292 - Vocabulary Strategy for Endings -s, -ed, -ing. Skim over the story you read on Friday - War Heroes in Stone (pg. 293). See how many of these endings you find in the story and how the endings can help you figure out word meaning. In your workbook, complete page 159. This is a review/practice for finding these endings in a story.
**This week, our story is different from any we have done up to now....it is a form of Poetry. This means it is more about the arrangement of carefully chosen words in lines that express thoughts and feelings. The lines may rhyme, and the rhymes may occur at the end of lines or in the middle of lines. However, not all poems rhyme. They might have rhythm, but no rhyming pattern. The focus is more on the sensory experience.
**Begin work on workbook page 16 - Poetry. As we read the poem, we will write down examples of Rhyme, Rhythm, and Words that appeal to the senses. Read just the first page of the poem - Page 296 in your Reading Street textbook, and write some notes on this workbook page as you discover them.
**We have a reading Zoom meeting scheduled on Thursday at 10:00. The link and code will be posted in classroom!

*Suptopic 3 - Preventing Strep Throat
*Conclusion
Continue the body paragraphs today. Tomorrow, we will work on the Conclusion.

This prayer not only applies to the chapter we are currently reading, but also to our Lenten practices, and the current world situation in general.Your assignment for today is to share this prayer with your own families this evening. In addition, I would like for you to send a prayer (this prayer or another) by text, email, or Facetime to other family members that you don’t get to see on a daily basis as well.

ELA: **Today, we are going to move on to writing a conclusion for the essay you have been working on this week. To start, please complete IXL - writing strategies Section P-2. This will help show you some examples of how a conclusion should begin.
**Next, take a look at the Conclusion page I posted in Google Classroom. It has suggestions for transitional words to use to show the reader that this will be the close of your essay. When you begin writing, be sure to come up with a way to revisit your topics and subtopics. You will want to end your essay with a suggestion - something that the reader can do to get involved with your topic. (For example, if you are researching the value of recycling, suggest to the reader at the end that he/she do good for the community and the world by participating in recycling.)
** Lastly, check out the Flipgrid link that was posted and try it out! We will be able to use this for some online assignments.

** If you haven’t already, please check out the Flipgrid link and try it! We will use it next week to share some work. We would love to see your responses! Also, be sure you have completed IXL Section P-2 (conclusions).
** You should be finishing up your paragraphs this week. Introduction (with a hook!), three subtopics (with support), and a conclusion. All of the info pages can be found on Classroom. Start to put the paragraphs together instead of the three separate sections that we have created. Use transitions to make the connections smooth. Next week, we will revise and edit your work.
** We will be working on this next week, but start to think of a way to share your project with us - you might want to create slides, a powerpoint, a poster, link video, etc. Hopefully, we will
be able to share them with each other once they are complete so that everyone has the opportunity to “teach” about your research.
** Have a good weekend!

Please complete “Share Your Love” in your textbook.
Update your Lenten Pathway: Help fold laundry/ put away laundry (or pray/fast/ give in another way:)

ELA: ** Journal #11 (4/1/20) Happy April Fools’ Day! In the spirit of the day, let’s talk jokes. Have you ever played a successful joke on someone? What was it? How did it work? Has anyone ever played a joke/prank on you? Tell about it.
** Good seeing some of you on Zoom yesterday! If you weren’t able to access, I am finding out how to correct everyone’s links so they are all working! We reviewed our writing projects up to now - introductions, three subtopics, and conclusions. We will finish them up this week. I have attached a revision checklist to Classroom - make additions/changes as they are needed - be sure that you used some of the suggested transitions! Once your checklist is complete, use the final editing guide that is in Classroom to check for correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. You should be ready for the final draft after today!
Reading: ** If you have not yet watched the powerpoint I have posted in Classroom about Number the Stars, please do so BEFORE reading the first chapter. I asked you to read Chapter 1. If you have not finished that, please finish that next!
** Use your knowledge of Chapter 1 to begin work on the character / vocabulary list I have assigned in Classroom. You will fill in only what you know about the characters named in the first chapter/ vocabulary words in the first chapter. The number next to the vocabulary word represents the page number in the book where the word is located.
** On a piece of paper, we are going to keep track of each chapter’s events. Label “Chapter 1 - Why Are You Running?” Please write a short (three sentence) summary that captures the meaning of Chapter 1. You may do this on a Doc, but if you do, you will not be able to draw a picture to go with the summary - it might be easier to write each NEATLY! :) Below your summary, draw a scene/symbol that stands out to you from the chapter. We will add to this and do the same for each chapter throughout the story. You will create a collection of important events and images to help you remember and better understand the plot. We have a Zoom meeting tomorrow, and I would like to share some of these and get us started on our discussion!

ELA: ** Today, you will spend some time looking for any related pictures, charts, graphs, etc. that will help to support your research. You may add these to your document. Also, put the sources that were used on a separate page - a “works cited” page. In classroom, you will see a sample page, and how you will want to “cite” your sources. You will find it under the “writing” section. Remember, it is necessary to list any source that was used - interviews, websites, books, video clips, etc. Soon, you will be turning in a finished essay and a bibliography. Use today to finish everything up! Your final copy will be due to be turned in on Monday! I am trying to figure out how we will be able to share our work with each other. Stay tuned!

Friday, 4/3/20
ELA: ** Journal #12 (4/3/20) What are some things that make you laugh? Was there ever a time when you laughed so hard that you couldn’t stop? Describe what happened.
** Mrs. Cloud has asked me to remind you to turn in your PE forms each week!
** I have added a Zoom meeting today at 10:00. It is optional - if you have any questions about reading/writing, and would like to meet in a group.
** Use today to finish up final copies of your research essays and works cited pages. Finish gathering pictures, charts, etc. to share with your paper. I am still looking for a way to share it with our class.
Reading: ** I have put a book trailer link on Classroom under the Number the Stars heading. Watching it might help you visualize the situations in the novel.
** After today, you should have completed reading Chapter 1, the Chapter 1 questions, (you do not have to do #7 and #8 - they will be in the next chapter!) and your mini summary and picture. At yesterday’s Zoom meeting, we discussed the background of the story, and we reviewed the vocabulary words and characters. For today, read Chapter 2 -”Who Is The Man Who Rides Past?” There are new characters mentioned - King Christian X, Lise Johansen. As you learn their involvement in the story, make a note of who they are, how they relate to the story on your character list. Then, complete a short (three sentence) summary and picture of an event that stood out to you.

Monday, 4/6: This week, I want you guys to be able to have some Science Fun! I miss doing labs and problem-solving activities with you! So today, you are going to choose a Science activity (of any topic), and you will have the next few days to work on it when you have time. You’ll each have a short amount of time (less than 1 minute:) to share with all of us what you’ve been up to during our Zoom class on Wednesday. **You do not need to make any kind of display- don't stress- this is supposed to be fun!
*Here are a few ideas that could work, but feel free to contact me with other ideas or questions, if you have them throughout the day:
Idea 1: I got this great email from our friends at Science Buddies with fun STEM ideas that you can do at home- you could choose to do one of these or something else from the site and share: https://www.sciencebuddies.org/blog/science-activities-toilet-paper-tubes?from=Newsletter
Idea 2: If you have a Science-themed kit at home that you bought previously or were given as a gift, you could carry this out- maybe it’s a crystal-growing, Mad Science, or Fossils, build-your-own-volcano, or Slime:)
Idea 3: Many of the zoos and aquariums around the country have live animal cams available on their websites. You may choose to observe one camera feed and tell us about your observations.

Wednesday, 4/8: We have our Zoom class today. The link is on Google Classroom.
Thursday, 4/9: *Please check that all remote assignments so far are complete.
Science "Homework" over the Easter break:
1.Check out a Science-themed show/ movie- there are lots of science and nature-themed documentaries and series, especially on Netflix and Disney+. I am watching a good one called "Science Fair" now.
2.Observe your local ecosystem- watch for connections in your own yard- birds, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, cats, etc., eating/ hunting smaller consumers or producers
3. Enjoy some time with your family appreciating nature- play a sport, do some yard work, have a picnic lunch, learn how to cook or bake something new with fruits or veggies.
Enjoy some time off! You have been working hard and you deserve it!
